Nokia N97 Mini – Five Reasons to Get Excited

The Nokia N97 mini takes everything we know about Nokia’s flagship device, the Nokia N97 and compacts it into a smaller and more pocket-sized companion. Now, we know it’s due in the next few weeks and we’re keen to get our hands on one, so we can see how it compares to our Nokia N97. In the meantime, find out why we’re getting excited about the Nokia N97 mini and see if you agree…
There have been rumours a plenty surrounding the Nokia N97 Mini after somebody at Vodaphone let slip some classified details a few months back. The basic premise of the N97 Mini is simple: It’s a smaller more affordable version of Nokia’s flagship device, the Nokia N97. The Nokia N97 mini has already gone up for pre-order on the Nokia Online store and will cost just £429 (inc. VAT) SIM free when it ships in the next few weeks.
In the meantime, here are our Top Five reasons why we’re getting excited about the upcoming release of the Nokia N97 mini:
Size: Sure the N97 mini is smaller than its bigger brother, the Nokia N97, but as we all know: size isn’t everything. This is particularly true in the world of mobile devices. The general idea behind making a Mini version of the Nokia N97 is to open out the benefits of the N97 to a larger consumer market. So in this sense, you lose a bit of storage space and screen size but still get a remarkable device for a significantly reduced price – which isn’t such a bad trade off now, is it?
Camera: Everybody is singing the praises of the iPhone and the HTC Hero, and rightly so, they’re very good devices on the whole. However, they do have one tiny chink in their otherwise flawless armour, which no software update can fix. In short, their cameras are rubbish.
Fortunately, the N97 mini couldn’t be more different sporting a high-end five megapixel high camera, complete with Carl-Zeiss Tessar lens, as well as dual LED camera flash and video light, making it a serious bit of kit for any aspiring photographer.
Design: While the N97 mini maybe smaller, it’s still retained all the good looks of its pricier older brother, as well as that handy full QWERTY keyboard and crystal clear 3.2 inch display. As you’d expect, Nokia have thrown in a few other choice morsels too. For starters there’s the debut of Life Casting – a joint venture between Ovi and Facebook – which detects your location and lets you update your status or profile from your home screen.
Additionally, the choice to include flick scrolling should make internet browsing and general navigation a hell of a lot smoother, which is definitely a good thing as this has, unfortunately, been an issue on some Nokia devices.
Storage: Granted the N97 mini is smaller, which means less storage space – but that’s the general idea of the device anyway: reduced size equates to reduced price. Simple. Nevertheless, there is the option to upgrade the ample 8GB storage space to a whooping 24GB with the inclusion of a MicroSD card, which is certainly good news for all the music lovers out there.
Entertainment: Another thing that puts the N97 mini slightly in front of the competition is that it has built in Flash. Put simply, this means that you can browse the internet as you would do at home with data rich web pages being rendered beautifully and fast. But most importantly, you aren’t confined to avoiding those pesky Flash enabled websites, and it’ll play back embedded videos extremely efficiently.
All in all, the Nokia N97 mini seems to be an extremely exciting prospect and one that promises not to disappoint. What do you think, will the Nokia N97 mini be something you’ll want to get your hands on, or are you waiting out for the Nokia N900, let us know in the Comments below.
