Nokia N97: MeCanto review

We love Spotify, especially the new S60 client[link to article], but it does have a couple of disadvantages. Firstly, it costs money – you need a premium Spotify account (at £9.99 a month) to be able to use the mobile client – and secondly, vast thought its library is it doesn’t have everything. If you don’t fancy shelling out for premium and/or have a taste for tunes that Spotify hasn’t gotten around to licensing yet then there is an alternative – MeCanto. Does it work? We gave MeCanto a spin, find out how we got on with our MeCanto review for the Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 Mini…
MeCanto lets you stream your own music library from your PC and play it on your mobile using an S60 client. For free.
So, MeCanto is a free download from the Ovi Store, but you will need to register on the MeCanto website and download the client software for your PC. The software is Windows only at the moment, although we were able to get it running satisfactorily on a Linux system using Wine. Mac users can manually upload tracks via the website, although this is a good deal more laborious. Setup is quick and your main task is to point the software at your music. MeCanto supports having several folders of music on different drives, so pointing it at both your main drive and a backup USB drive is no problem.
The music is stored securely, and is accessible only by you. Once you have let the software upload details of your tracks to the MeCanto website (this can take a while if you have a lot of tunes) you can sign in to the mobile app and start listening.
Sound quality was pretty good – there was noticeable buffering in staring the tracks but no judders or skipping during play. Navigating your music is on a par with the built-in music player for simplicity and it is easy to assemble custom playlists both on your handset or on the MeCanto website (you can use the website as a media player too, if you like – handy for listening to music in work). The main disadvantage compared to, say, Spotify is the lack of offline play. If your wifi or 3G link goes down you will lose the ability to play music, which means no MeCanto on the Tube, alas.
Despite this, if you have a reasonably sized music collection and a decent home broadband connection going to waste you could do worse than give MeCanto a try.
