We have no idea – its in your pocket, after all, not ours – but the chances are you may not know either. Sure, you can check the onscreen display to see if you have a 3G signal, or if the Internet is working and so on, but if you think there might be a problem then there isn’t much you can do other than take the phone in to the nearest phone shop and get someone to take a look (while someone else sidles up and tries to flog you a 24 month contract for a new phone). Read on to find out how we got on with our Nokia Diagnostics review

If you have a 5th Edition S60 phone then Nokia’s Beta Labs may have a little something that will help you find any potential problems (or just check that everything is working as it should be) without having to hand your phone over to an ‘expert’.

Nokia Diagnostics comes with five diagnostic tests – Network coverage, Internet Connectivity, Battery Charger, Earpiece and Loudspeaker. The latter two are basically the same test, just pumped through a different audio output, but we’ll not quibble.

The app is simple to use – just select a test and follow the onscreen instructions. In the case of the audio tests this boils down to listening to the default ringtone and telling the app if you could hear it. With the other tests, the testing mechanism is a bit more opaque – the app is clearly doing something but without a clearer understanding of your phone’s internals it is obviously difficult to tell exactly what. The results are helpful, though. Checking network coverage tells you not only if you have a connection or not, but gives you information about the kind of connection and rates the current signal strength.

Battery Charger will check to see that your battery is taking on charge correctly and that it doesn’t need to be replaced, or your charger checked. Internet Connectivity will go beyond just checking your link, but can usually work out the best way to configure new connections – it is probably worth running this whenever you start using a new Wi-Fi hotspot, just to make sure all is well.

There is nothing particularly groundbreaking in Nokia Diagnostics, but this is still an app we will be keeping tucked away on a memory card – being able to quickly check our phone’s key functions isn’t something we will be doing every day but for those occasions when we just can’t get 3G or when browsing isn’t working as we think it should, having an authoritative way to check what is up could stop us from tearing out our hair more than is necessary.
